The Starts With Hello Week is a program to help students build empathy, healthy relationships, and social awareness through a total of connection activities, just by saying hello!
This event went from Sept. 16 to Sept. 20 this year. It’s free to sign up for the Start With Hello week.
“The Starts With Hello Week is important because it should remind us of the Sandy Hook Promise to create a culture of kindness and treat individuals the way you want to be treated,” Ms. Blake says.
Student council did something called the “Hello Campaign”. The “Hello Campaign” is a campaign where student council members went outside to the bus ramp, or the car rider line and they held up signs saying hello, and they passed out candy. Students got candy by greeting one of those students. It’s not a reward, but it’s appreciated.
“Kids and people can get better at communicating with this event because I believe students that would be invited to this event can bring a lot of ideas to the table, dealing with how kids feel and what we can do to improve,” Ms. Blake says.
The Starts With Hello Week was made by an organization called Sandy Hook Promise. It was founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, 2012. The mission was to teach empathy and empower students to end social isolation.
