When the season ends in any sport, whether basketball, football, track, or volleyball, they go into a process called offseason. The offseason is when athletes work the hardest and try to squeeze in anything they can before the next season starts.
Offseason is where you have the most time to do anything you would like, however, as most people would look at it as a good thing, having that much time off could be a bad thing. All that time to yourself could lead to laziness, procrastination, bad nutrition, and boredom. However, you could easily avoid these problems by keeping yourself busy and minding your own business.
Offseason Tips
While in the offseason, you must find time to do the things you enjoy doing the most. Whether it is playing video games, working out, or playing outside, you must use your time wisely. In the offseason, you should focus on getting better because other players will be getting bigger, stronger, and faster. In the offseason, you work your hardest while keeping your head down and keeping to yourself, not letting anything outside of what you do distract you.
Being in the offseason can really affect your playing and mental abilities while in the in season. If you would like to succeed in the real season, the offseason is where it starts. You have to have a strong mindset, and work ethic. However, not everything in the offseason has to be based on solely working out. It could also be your time to relax and do the things you like to do.
A Coaches Advice
Jeremey Burkhalter, 3rd in scoring at Sam Houston State University and current coach at Woodcreek Middle School, had many words to share about what to do in the offseason and how you could further develop while in the offseason. Coach Burkhalter states, “I always spent some time reflecting on the past season. I would identify my weaknesses and strengths and get a plan together to work on my weaknesses.”
Coach Burkhalter has a couple tips on what to do in the offseason. He explains, “I would work out at least five days a week and use a few days to recover.”
In addition, Coach Burkhalter said, “the mental (aspect) is the most important thing to work on because self discipline and motivation will keep you going when others are not around and you don’t feel like working or sacrificing what it takes to be great.”
Recovery
Injuries can occur especially while in the regular season. Being in the offseason is the best chance to recover from those injuries. While suffering from an injury you must take the time to rest, eat clean, and stretch. These all collectively will further help you in the long run while recovering from injuries that occurred in the regular season. With all the time you have in the offseason, your best bet is to stretch and take a break especially the first two weeks after the season.
Offseason Gives Us Time
The offseason gives us time and we need to use this to the best of our abilities and eventually get to the point where the workout becomes more challenging than the actual game. To get better at the sport you play and have the ability to dominate you must train your best at all times. The offseason is where athletes use their time wisely, and this further benefits us when we get to the next season.
